Obesity Surgery
Obesity is associated with comorbidities (other health problems) and reduced life expectancy. Weight loss or obesity surgery (bariatric surgery) is the only treatment that is shown to produce effective long term weight loss and is the treatment of choice in patients with a Body Mass Index exceeding 40 Kg/m2 or 35 Kg/m2 with presence of a co-morbidity.
BMI (we have a BMI Calculator on the left of every page)
The Body Mass Index (BMI) measures your weight relative to your height and is a reliable indicator of body fatness. The ideal body mass index falls in the range between 19 and 24.9. If your BMI is greater than 30, you are considered obese and may be a good candidate for weight-loss surgery.
The higher your body mass index, the greater your risk of disease, including heart disease, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and type 2 diabetes. More than 300,000 lives in the United States could be saved each year if everyone stayed at a healthy BMI. You can check yours by using the BMI calculator on this page and then reviewing the chart below to see if your health is at risk.
Obesity is associated with an increased risk of developing high blood pressure and coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidaemia (high lipid levels), stroke, sleep apnea and asthma. There is also a direct association of obesity with social isolation, depression and daytime fatigue/sleepiness. It has become more evident that obesity is related to increased risk of different types of cancers, impaired fertility, stress incontinence, backache, joint pains and other musculoskeletal problems.
Health consequences of obesity can include:
Type 2 diabetes
Heart disease
Liver disease
Cancers (endometrial, breast and colon)
High blood pressure
High cholesterol
Degeneration of cartilage (osteoarthritis)
Reproductive health problems
Stroke
Incontinence
Obstructive sleep apnea
Infertility
Depression
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Bariatric surgery has been shown to cure or improve most of these co-morbidities including a 50% to 90% cure in type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea and asthma, and improved life expectancy.
The procedures performed are:
•Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass
•Laparoscopic Gastric Band
•Endoscopic insertion of an Intra-Gastric Balloon
•Laparoscopic Gastric Plication
•Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
•Oesophagectomy
•Laparoscopic Revisional Surgery (surgery needed for complications or weight re-gain)
